So Luke, tell us a bit about yourself:
Although I was born in North Wales, I grew up in the Somerset countryside and as much as I do love that part of the country, over the years I’ve managed to drift back up North. I now live in Chester with my partner and am known to love cooking, board games, and perhaps being somewhat eclectic with the processes I follow in making my morning coffee.
What is your role in Oxbury and when did you join?
I joined the IT team at Oxbury in June 2019 as a Junior Software Engineer, primarily working on our customer dashboards and banking integrations. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work across the broad scope of our codebase and now find myself working as a Senior Engineer leading a small pod within the ‘Core Banking’ team. This role affords me the opportunity to really get into the nuts and bolts of what makes the bank run, from nightly calculations of interest to ensuring payments flow through the system unimpeded.
Tell us about your background and how that has led to you working at Oxbury and the role that you are in?
I’ve always had an interest in all things tech and software. I took this interest with me to Aberystwyth University, studying Computer Science where I was shown the expansive scope of what software can be used to achieve. When I left university, I knew I wanted to find a job that saw me not only writing software but doing so to an end that was able to help people in their day-to-day lives. Pair that with a familial connection to farming (my grandparents own a small cattle and sheep farm in North Wales), and I can say for certain I found that at Oxbury.
How would your colleagues describe you in 3 words?
- Helpful
- Considerate
- Reliable
What do you like most in your current role?
I love the team that I work with; we work very collaboratively at Oxbury and it’s great to have the opportunity to work with colleagues across the business to develop and deliver software that makes both theirs, and our customers’ lives easier. We’re also lucky to be able to utilise new and interesting technologies, and work in an environment that fosters innovation and experimentation.
What is your proudest moment from working at Oxbury?
It’s been great being able to work on the foundations of a bank that has now grown to serve so many customers. I feel especially lucky to have been able to work on it from such an early stage and see it grow. To name just one example, I was fortunate enough to work closely on the development of our Asset Finance product which, since launching, has been used to help purchase kit for so many of our customers.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself or an interesting, yet unhelpful fact that you know?
The only claim to fame of the small village where I grew up is it being the subject of a Wurzels song.
